Reducing food loss and waste

World Hunger is on the rise; yet, an estimated one third of all food produced globally is lost or goes to waste.

We all have a part to play in reducing food loss and waste, not only for the sake of the food but for the resources that go into it (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations 2020).

How much food gets wasted?

6.6 million tonnes of food was wasted in the UK – with households accounting for 70% of this figure.

34% of the food thrown away in households, consists of fresh fruit
and vegetables (Wrap 2020).

Which fruits and vegetables do we throw away the most?

Every single day in UK homes we  throw away approximately:

2.7 million carrots, 86,000 lettuces (the tip of the iceberg),
800,000 apples, 920,000 bananas, 1.2 million tomatoes (Wrap 2020).

What can we do?

Climacteric fruits and vegetables don’t last very long before they start to spoil. Which is why we at Symphony have developed SYM Fresh food bags. This product will help keep fruit and vegetables crisp’n’fresh for longer. All you have to do is place one type of fruit or vegetable in a SYM Fresh bag and press the seal strip.
SYM Fresh bags can help you to prevent food waste.
